James is currently one of the HDR UK alumni network coordinators, and a third year PhD student at York, researching how machine learning can be used in the classification and characterisation of lymphomas.
His current work is a collaboration between one of the largest population-based cohorts for blood cancer patients in the world (HMRN); and clinicians and haematopathologists from the NHS in Leeds. The work is funded by Cancer Research UK.
James’ background is in maths and statistics, where he studied Maths and Economics at York at undergraduate level. He then moved to Exeter to undertake a masters degree in Health Data Science, where he was awarded a scholarship by HDR UK.
During his Master’s degree, James helped put together a dataset of over 600,000 patients with diabetes from CPRD and performed survival analysis on these patients to investigate risk factors for COVID-19 mortality in younger patients with diabetes.
